Goodwood sees return of Cummins Mini: now 4,400bhp 25 June 2015

Goodwood Festival of Speed (which starts tomorrow 25 July 2015) will see the re-incarnation of the legendary Cummins Mini now uprated to 4,400bhp.

Last seen in 2010 at Goodwood, the crazy Mini was previously fitted with the QSK78 3,500hp engine, but this original Austin Mini now has a new 4,400bhp QSK95 power source.

"The 3,500hp Mini display certainly proved a draw for visitors and customers," states Cummins communications director Steve Nendick.

"So, for 2015 we decided to do something even more impressive with our 4,400hp engine," he adds, explaining that the QSK95 is a V16 95 litre engine developing more than 16,000Nm of torque.

In fact, this engine is designed to power locomotives, mine trucks, power generation units and marine vessels.

It meets the ultra-low US Tier 4 Final emissions regulations with the use of SCR (selective catalytic reduction) after-treatment – as used by many of today's Euro 6 trucks and buses.

"It uses some of the same technology as a commercial vehicle engine, such as common rail fuel systems and SCR, but on a much larger scale," comments Nendick.

"The QSK95 provides the torque of 16 delivery trucks, city buses or excavators," he continues.

"Each of the 16 cylinders has a cubic capacity of 5.9 litres – the same as the original Cummins B Series engine, and the equivalent of six of the original Mini one litre engines."

Nendick concedes that this Mini will never actually run, as it has no transmission, fuel tank, cooling system, or exhaust system.

As a complete power pack with all these systems installed, it would be about the same size as the Cummins 40 foot exhibition trailer," laughs Nendick.

To mark the appearance of the 4,400hp original Mini, Cummins is running a photo competition at Goodwood. The target is to reach 4,400 photos tweeted using #cumminsmini.

The top 10 most original pictures will be announced on Twitter by @cumminseurope and receive a QSK95 related prize.
