Goodyear introduces microchip technology for truck tyres 08 December 2011

Goodyear's new Regional RHT II RFID (radio frequency identification) 435/50R19.5 trailer tyre features a built-in microchip claimed to enable fleet operators to cut downtime, and improve tyre management and security.

The system connects to FleetOnlineSolutions, Goodyear's Internet-based tyre management system, and enables service provider or fleet operators to quickly scan all tyres and record details electronically.

European logistics provider Ewals Cargo Care, which has been running trials, says the benefits are real.

"The RFID speeds-up maintenance as it allows us to very quickly and accurately identify tyres [by] linking into FleetOnlineSolutions," explains Ewals fleet control manager Bart van Ren. "It will also reduce the problem of tyres being stolen from our trailers."

For its part, Goodyear explains that the 435/50R19.5 tyre size was selected for RFID fitment simply because it is the most popular among megatrailer operators – allowing maximum volume within the European 4m trailer height limit.

Several large megatrailer fleets are now using the FleetOnlineSolutions, according to Goodyear, for tyre management, and benefiting from the close monitoring that RFID allows.

The microchip is built into the tyre on the assembly line and programmed with a unique code that identifies the tyre, enabling a hand-held reader to see type and size as well as its identity number.
