Goodyear shows prototype low rolling resistance tyres 29 September 2016

Goodyear unveiled its Super Fuelmax prototype low rolling resistance truck tyres at the 2016 IAA commercial vehicle show, in Hanover, Germany (22—29 September 2016).

Both the steer and drive tyres have been labelled ‘A’ for fuel saving and were displayed as 385/55R22.5 S steer tyres and 315/70R22.5 D drive tyre.

The drive tyre also bears the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain and Snow Flake) winter tyre certification.

They were displayed mounted on a DAF XF 4x2 tractor unit.

Benjamin Willot, director marketing commercial tyres at Goodyear, explains that these are a development of Goodyear’s existing Fuelmax low rolling resistance tyre range.

“The new Goodyear Super Fuelmax prototype tyres illustrate our commitment to develop advanced fuel saving truck tyres for our customers with a balanced performance in the other important criteria,” states Willot.

In brief detail, the tread design of the Super Fuelmax S steer tyre features Goodyear’s IntelliMax Groove Technology, claimed to limit slip, especially when cornering, thanks to hidden raindrop grooves, which close when rolling through the footprint.

The ribs also support each other, so reducing movement and stiffening the tread.

Meanwhile, the tread blocks of the Super Fuelmax D drive tyre have been re-designed and the stiffness of the blocks improved.

Additionally, IntelliMax Rib Technology has been introduced between the central and intermediate ribs to stiffen the tread, which Goodyear claims delivers not only improved low rolling resistance, but also high mileage and regular wear.
