The new buses, which run on electricity from wind- and hydro-power, also provide facilities for passengers to recharge their phones onboard and enter and exit the bus from indoors.
Gothenburg's bus route 55 now has three all-electric buses and seven electric hybrid buses, all from Volvo Buses, and all with batteries that are rapidly recharged at the terminal stops.
Niklas Gustafsson, Volvo's chief sustainability officer, explains that the Gothenburg all-electric bus route is a result of ElectriCity, a collaborative enterprise that develops, tests and demonstrates new sustainable transport for the future.
In addition to the buses, ElectriCity develops and tests bus stop systems, traffic management systems, safety concepts and energy supply systems.
