Government to award £25m for advanced biofuel production in the UK12 December 2014

The government has launched a £25 million funding scheme to build three advanced biofuel plants which, in total, will be producing three million litres of biofuel per year from December 2018.

Launched this week (10 December), the Advanced Biofuels Demonstration Competition is being run by the Department for Transport and supported by consultancies Ricardo-AEA and E4tech.

The competition will be run in two stages. First, potential bidders have until 13 February 2015 to submit a detailed expression of interest.

These will be assessed by a selection panel: up to five applicants will then have until 12 June 2015 to develop a full application for phase two funding. They will be assisted in this process by Ricardo-AEA and E4tech.

Up to three projects are expected to be completed, with each plant producing one million litres of biofuel a year from December 2018.

The fuel produced must show a minimum of 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fossil fuels.

"Advanced biofuels will play an increasingly important role in lowering carbon emissions from transport, and these fuel plants will help ensure the UK is leading the way in building our capacity," says transport minister Baroness Kramer.

"This country has world-class research capabilities and I want the development of green technology to be part of this success story."
