Government’s road funding ‘won’t deliver on benefits’ - survey15 December 2014

Most transport operators remain unconvinced as to the benefits they will see from the government's extra £1.5 billion of road improvements, announced earlier this month (1 December).

That's the overarching view from a survey by MiX Telematics, which asked 500 operators what they thought about the government's investment programme.

In the 48 hours following the announcement, operators were asked to comment. None believed the £1.5bn was entirely new money: two-thirds thought the sum included funds already committed; and one third said it was simply a re-announcement of old news.

Most respondents believed that only half of the money, at most, will actually be spent on road improvements, with most thinking motorways would receive the bulk of this.

When asked whether the investment would reduce congestion, only 50% of respondents thought it would.

Operators were also asked what they would do if they controlled the roads budget. Responses varied from road resurfacing to introduction of a 'pay as you go' road user tax.
