GPS jammer criminals set for truck load of surprises09 March 2010

Criminal gangs importing GPS jammers from China to help them steal transporters with valuable loads will soon be in for nasty surprise, according to tracking and recovery systems specialist Tracker.

Stephen Doran, managing director of Tracker, says his organisation is preparing to launch a product that resists attempts to block signals between a GPS satellite and its receiver – keeping trucks visible to police.

His new unit, called Tracker Locate, incorporates GSM, GPS and VHF technology, and raises an alert if it detects an attempt to jam the communication system or tamper with the unit.

The result, says Doran, is that the police and owner are instantly aware of an attempted theft, and can use the precision VHF technology to track the stolen vehicle to its location.

"There is an over-reliance, particularly on GPS alone, as a security and recovery system. We don't believe a single technology system is robust enough."
