Green coach company to trial Michelin X Energy SaverGreen tyres01 June 2011

Stoke-based bus and coach operator Bakers Coaches, which won an Environmental Business Award for cutting carbon emissions, is starting trials of Michelin's X Energy SaverGreen tyres this month.

The firm, dubbed The Green Coach Company because of its livery, has already built an eco-friendly operating centre and recently installed GreenRoad vehicle telematics and Masternaught tracking technology fleet-wide.

Managing director Phil Baker says trialling Michelin's X Energy SaverGreen tyres was the natural next step, with their promise of 1.7 litre fuel saving per 100km, compared with the industry average.

"Tests have shown that these tyres offer the greatest potential for long-term fuel savings, meaning both an improvement in profitability and further carbon emission reductions," states Baker.

"Our expectations for the trial are extremely positive. Given the tyres' track record, we are expecting to see significant fuel and cost savings," he adds. And he says that, if so, the Michelin tyres are likely to be fitted across the coach fleet.

Designed for long-distance and high average speeds on motorways and main roads, X Energy SaverGreen tyres incorporate a patented Energy Flex casing, said to maintain a low rolling resistance throughout the tyres' life, and 'double wave' sipes, built into the drive-axle tread pattern to improve traction by up to a claimed 10% on damp, slippery surfaces, compared to the Michelin XDA2+.
