Grundy builds tipper fleet with fuel-saving Mercedes Arocs24 June 2014

Waste management and construction contractor Grundy & Co Excavations has taken delivery of its first Mercedes truck, an 8x4 Arocs 3240, and says the vehicle is already achieving 2 mpg better fuel performance than its other 30 tippers.

Supplied by dealer Road Range, the Euro 6 Arocs is powered by a 394bhp, 10.7-litre engine, and is fitted with a steel tipping body by Abba Commercials.

"We needed an extra truck to cope with growing demand, so decided it was time to try one out," says Kevin Grundy, managing director of the Widnes-based business.

The Arocs met all his criteria, he says, and notes that the raised ride height, traction, and automated transmission's Rocking mode to cope with rough terrain were particularly attractive features.

"The fuel consumption, though, is a real eye-opener," adds Grundy. "In this application, 6-7 mpg is considered the norm, but the Arocs is returning 9-10 mpg – which puts it a good 2 mpg ahead of our other eight-wheelers."

Grundy & Co provides a muckaway service, then crushes, washes and grades the material. It supplies aggregates back to construction and civil engineering sites within a 25-mile radius of its Widnes base.
