Half-year van registrations soar while trucks slide 04 July 2014

The figure for commercial vehicle registrations in June was 33,941 – up 25.5%, compared with the same period last year – generating a total of 171,968 for the year to date (+11/.3%) and 344,762 for the rolling year (+16.4%).

Growth was again led by van sales , which were up 33.3% at 30,712 registered in June. That is an impressive jump, putting year-to-date volumes up 16.8% at 155,532 and the rolling year, 293,428 (+16.0%).

However, truck registrations declined to 3,229 – down 19.2% on the figure for last year. And the rolling year figure – while still healthy at 51,334 (up 18%) – is meaningless, given the high volume of sales at the end of last year ahead of Euro 6.

4x2tractors showed the worst decline – down 45.9% for June, compared to the same month in 2013 – while 6x2s were down 21.1%.

"The van market has shown another strong performance in June, yielding higher than expected growth for the year so far," comments SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.

"This has helped the total commercial vehicle market achieve half-year growth of more than 11%, despite a somewhat depressed truck sector," he continues.

"Trucks continued to decline in the first six months of the year in the wake of an extremely strong end to 2013, ahead of the introduction of Euro6."
