Harris Transport couples safety and speed with Jost 3-Sensor fifth wheel18 July 2014

Haulage firm Harris Transport has specified Jost's sliding fifth wheel and FleetMaster handle for its latest truck, a DAF XF105, to boost speed and safety on vehicle turnarounds.

The equipment was proposed by Jost, after Harris Transport co-owner George Harris approached the company for a solution to miss-coupling.

"We often do drop and swap operations on our overnight deliveries," explains Harris.

"However, we have found that on occasions drivers may drop a trailer at the delivery yard, which can slow things down and could potentially be a safety concern."

The FleetMaster handle, along with the 3-Sensor sliding fifth wheel system, monitors the kingpin position and warns the driver if coupling is not carried out correctly.

With an extended reach, the handle also makes it easier for the driver to access the dog clip and reduces the force needed for operation.

The 3-Sensor system has, as its name suggests, three sensors to monitor the lock jaw, king pin position and trailer height. If any are out of alignment, the driver is notified on an in-cab monitor.

Harris reports incident-free operation since the system was installed.
