Haulier cashes in with new yard-based TPMS02 August 2018

Scottish haulier Smith of Denny has trialled a new yard-based tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) ahead of its launch by Continental Tyres, and says the system has “proved its value” many times over.

The latest addition to Continental’s ContiPressureCheck (CPC) system is now available and comprises a Yard Reader Station linked to the ContiConnect web portal.

The system automatically reads and logs tyre pressures and temperature from all trucks and trailers leaving and entering a yard, whether or not they are Continental tyres – any brand can be fitted with a CPC sensor. It then transmits this information, via GSM, to the online portal.

“We fit CPC sensors to all our tyres, so the Yard Reader Station works across every vehicle we run, and results have been very accurate from day one,” says Andrew Smith, director. “Based on tyre life and the impact on safety and fleet performance, it’s an investment delivering worthwhile returns.”

Cost prevention and zero downtime are the biggest benefits for his fleet of 26 trucks and 50 trailers, he says.

“Whenever a truck goes out of the yard, we have the information we need to make instant decisions that can prevent a complete tyre failure, save on lost performance from poorly inflated tyres, and avoid blow-outs and the ensuing critical downtime.

“We can spot things drivers couldn’t, such as slightly low inflation levels or indications of a slow puncture, and, if they have already left the yard, we can get on to them immediately to alert them to any actions they need to take.”

Smith adds: “We have a great relationship with Continental, so were happy to trial what we were told would be another advance in tyre management – and so it has proved to be. The technology has proved its value over and over again during the past year.”
