Haulier selects Actros for fuel efficiency21 November 2013

Norfolk-based haulier Foulger Transport has added seven Mercedes-Benz Actros 2545 tractors to its 100-strong fleet, after a trial revealed better fuel performance than its established fleet marque.

Supplied by dealer Intercounty Truck & Van, the Actros tractors all have aerodynamic, flat-floored StreamSpace cabs and are powered by 450bhp straight-six engines, with PowerShift 3 automated transmissions.

Paul Willis, Foulger's group transport manager, says: "Although we'd heard good things about the fuel performance of the new Actros, it had to prove its worth to win a place in our fleet."

Intercounty provided the haulier with a demonstrator, so it could assess performance in real working conditions. Willis adds: "We'd always expect new trucks to be slightly better than older ones on fuel. But the fact that some of our new Mercedes-Benz units are more than 3 mpg ahead of our current fleet tractors is certainly encouraging."

The tractors are all equipped with DaimlerFleetBoard telematics systems to provide fuel consumption data, as well as information on driver performance.

Three of the new additions are used for general distribution; four are equipped with hydraulic gear and pull bulk tipping trailers.

The operator has already placed an order for more Actros tractors to add to its fleet.
