Health checks offered by Stagecoach on bespoke bus 26 February 2010

A joint commitment between BMI Healthcare and Stagecoach will provide the opportunity for employees of the transport group's bus division to undergo free heart checkups.

This voluntary scheme will involve a double-decker 'healthy heart' bus, refurbished by Plaxton so that it can operate as a mobile cardio-screening unit. The bus has been equipped with patient consultation facilities and ECG equipment.

Stagecoach's vehicle will tour its bus depots, with those in the North-East and Scotland being the first to benefit when the scheme starts its rounds in early March.

The company claims that thousands of staff will benefit from the £2 million initiative, which has been half funded by chief executive Brian Souter.
"This kind of personal health check is often only available to senior executives," says Souter. "We felt it was important to extend the service to our frontline employees, who serve our customers every day. The Healthy Heart Bus will allow us to do that."

The project will run for the next three to four years, and will be operated by BMI Healthcare nurses and doctors, who will assess the health of staff and offer advice on how to improve their well-being.
