Hermes fleet moves onto Michelin low rolling resistance tyres 30 September 2013

Hermes has renewed a three-year Michelin tyre contract, which now sees the haulier specifying the latest generation of fuel-saving tyres for its trunking vehicles.

The Leeds-based operator, which runs 490 trucks and 450 trailers, traditionally fitted Michelin XTE3 regional trailer tyres, before deciding to trial Michelin's X Energy SaverGreen XT fitments, when ordering 300 Cheetah Fastback trailers, from Cartwright, in September last year.

The combination of low rolling resistance tyres and aerodynamic trailers reduced fuel consumption of vehicles pulling the trailers by an average of 4.5%, compared to standard tyres and trailers, according to the operator.

This return prompted Hermes to renew its tyre contract, says fleet manager Rob Elmore, with the company specifically specifying Michelin's low rolling resistance tyres across its long-distance fleet.

"When we placed an order for new aerodynamic trailers Michelin recommended fitting energy saving tyres so we could get the maximum return from our investment," confirms Elmore.

"For a fleet of our size, [the 4.5% fuel consumption reduction] adds up to a significant saving," he continues.

"And as a direct result we have now started to specify Michelin's latest low rolling resistance tyres on our tractor units, too."

Hermes will continue to fit its trailers with X Energy SaverGreen XT tyres, while all new tractor units will come on the latest low rolling resistance X Line Energy tyres, as standard.
