Hurricane blasts away tyre waste29 October 2013

Tyre manufacturer Continental has developed a machine to recycle rubberised steel cord scrap, a byproduct of tyre production.

The unit, called the Hurricane (pictured), applies mechanical force to the waste and, once the rubber is granulated, high-powered magnets remove any remaining steel. The steel is then sold for recycling and the rubber compound is reused in Continental's European plants which make commercial vehicle tyres.

The machine was developed by the firm's former head of environmental protection Dr Martin Theusner, who was tasked with finding a sustainable solution to preserve valuable raw materials.

Continental worked with a recycling equipment manufacturer to build the machine, which is located at Continental's factory in Puchov (Slovakia). Hurricane is already processing uncured rubber scrap from most of Continental's European manufacturing sites.
