Hyva tips the balance for Scottish aggregate business14 January 2014

Scottish stone and aggregate business Collier Group has added a V8-engine Scania R620 6x2 tag axle tractor. fitted with Hyva hydraulics to its tipper fleet.

The Cowdenbeath-based firm is using this latest vehicle at its Goathill quarry, which is now in full operation.

Collier Group director David Collier says that, while attention is usually focused on the tipping cylinders, the key component for the tractor is the wet kit.

Controllability is important, he says, adding: "Usually we want a fast up/down tipping cycle, but sometimes we might need the trailer just to go up very slowly on not much more than engine tickover.

"Hyva wet kits let us do everything, and with complete reliability, too."

They also benefit from minimal oil capacity and hence minimal tank size, making the auxiliary equipment compact and light weight.

As well as artics, Collier's fleet includes 12 Volvo FM rigids fitted with Hyva FE149 eye end tipping cylinders, which work in conjunction with high-capacity bulk bodies built by Weightlifter Scotland.

With their sides as high as the cab roof and a front bulkhead brought as close as possible to the cab's rear wall, Collier says his trucks achieve maximum practical payload volume.

"Whether trailers or rigids, bulk bodies are key to our operation. They allow us to carry any product, from stone and sand through to recycling materials," says Collier.

"Using Hyva eye end tipping gears inside the front bulkhead means they are also fully protected from accidental damage, which in turn gives us 100% tipping reliability."
