IJ McGill chooses fleet of DAF LF55 rigids for Manchester depot 20 July 2012

Bristol distribution company IJ McGill Transport has taken delivery of eight DAF LF55s for its new 20,000ft2 depot in Manchester.

Specifying the maximum 6.5-metre wheelbase on the LF55 has enabled 8.54-metre curtainsider bodies to be fitted – a first for the company.

With a width of 2.54m and a height of just over 3m, these provide more than 66m3 of space, while fully-opening rear doors and a 1.5 tonne tuckaway tail-lift ease loading and unloading.

Power for the LF55s is from a 6.7-litre DAF GR165 Euro 5 engine producing 220bhp at 1,900rpm and 850Nm of torque between 1,200 and 1,700rpm.

A six-speed AS Tronic automated gearbox gas also been specified, with an 11.5 tonne single reduction drive axle completing the driveline.

At 18 tonnes this gives a power to weight ratio of 12.2 bhp/tonne, which, combined with the engine's flexible torque characteristics, should enable the trucks to cope easily with the terrain across northern England and Wales.

"DAF and the team at the Leyland Assembly Plant demonstrated a very strong 'can do' attitude throughout that resulted in high quality trucks and bodies," comments Ian McGill, founder of the company.
