IMI launches online drive for industry apprentices21 August 2014

Commercial vehicle manufacturers, including Volvo Trucks, Ford, Scania and Mercedes, are backing a social media campaign by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to encourage young people to consider an apprenticeship in the motor industry.

Launched today (21 August) as GCSE results are revealed, the week-long social media campaign will promote the sector under the #motorcareers banner.

The IMI will also promote the campaign through its 587 centres and training providers.

Research carried out for the campaign reveals only 19% of parents would encourage their child to undertake a vocational qualification and fewer than one in 10 would encourage their children to work in the motor industry.

The IMI says potential earnings are high, with a 16-year-old picking the vocational route able to earn on average £60,000 to £100,000 more than an academic student by the age of 25 – not including the estimated £55,000 debt that accompanies university graduation.

"Automotive apprentices can train in top class colleges and in cutting edge facilities. For a young apprentice in the motor industry there is the added advantage of earning while they learn," says Steve Nash, IMI chief executive.

"As an example, qualified technicians can earn more than the UK average wage, £25-35k in most cases. It is a fantastic option for anyone completing their GCSEs."
