Intelligent transport one step nearer, with smartphone link 03 January 2013

Continental's new DTCO SmartLink and VDO Driver app now allow commercial vehicle drivers to use their smartphones to access digital tachograph data via Bluetooth.

Dr Michael Ruf, head of commercial vehicles and aftermarket at Continental, explains that drivers simply plug the SmartLink into the interface on the front of the DTCO. As soon as a connection is established with the smartphone, it can be used as a remote control for the tachograph.

"With DTCO SmartLink and our app solutions, we are adding one more element to our vision of intelligent transport systems," says Ruf.

Through the system, drivers will be able to display their driving and rest times on their smartphones, he says, and also calculate remaining driving and rest times, sending them directly to the DTCO 2.0 screen, or to the smartphone.

"We provide the means for efficient driving by delivering maximum information about the vehicle, and data-sharing between drivers and fleet headquarters," comments Ruf.
