IRTE to work with FTA, RHA and CILT to attract talent 07 August 2015

The IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) and the three leading trade bodies in the UK representing logistics are to work together to improve the transport industry’s image – and to attract more staff.

The announcement follows a recent round table event involving the FTA (Freight Transport Association), RHA (Road Haulage Association), CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) and the IRTE aimed at establishing best routes to promote logistics and specifically to bear down the shortage of drivers and technicians.

"The UK's road transport sector is the backbone of its economic infrastructure," comments IRTE executive director Ian Chisholm.

"We must continually look at where we are with regards to how we promote road transport, and who we attract to this vital industry," he continues.

"By working together we will have a stronger voice and be better able to support road transport professionals, ensuring the long-term viability of the UK's road transport network."

FTA chief executive David Wells adds: "We are in a battle for talent and facing a skills shortage, so we need to up our game to attract young people, ethnic minorities and women to our industry – areas where we are seriously under-represented."

RHA CEO Richard Burnett sys: "The RHA already works hard to give road transport operators a voice [but] by collaborating with the FTA, CILT and IRTE to raise the profile of the industry, we can make that voice even stronger."

"The Institute's motto is 'Stronger Together'," says outgoing CILT CEO Steve Agg, "and we believe that by working together with the FTA, RHA and IRTE we can promote the many benefits of our industry."
