IVECO and Nikola unveil the all-electric Nikola TRE04 December 2019

IVECO and Nikola have unveiled a prototype of the Nikola TRE, the first electric truck to be built by the partnership between Nikola Motor Co and CNH Industrial, IVECO’s parent company.

The vehicle is based on the IVECO S-WAY truck, and will include Nikola’s advanced electric technology and new-generation proprietary infotainment system.

The prototype shown at the launch event yesterday (3 December), in Turin, was the Nikola TRE 4x2 tractor, which is said to have a range of up to 400km. Its modular battery system boasts a capacity of up to 720kWh and can be tailored to suit operators’ needs. The electric driveline will deliver 480kW continuous power output with maximum torque of 1,800Nm.

The infotainment system will include climate control, mirror adjustment, suspension height adjustment, 360-degree camera system, navigation, Bluetooth audio system, vehicle settings and vehicle diagnostics.

The Nikola TRE will also be available in two- and three-axle versions, with gvw from 18 to 26 tonnes.

The vehicle is being designed with one eye on the future, with the partners promising a subsequent hydrogen fuel cell version.

The Nikola TRE will be launched at IAA 2020; deliveries of the electric version will begin in 2021, with the hydrogen fuel cell model available from 2023.

Gerrit Marx, president of commercial and specialty vehicles at CNH Industrial, said: “The IVECO S-WAY is a standout product, which embodies IVECO’s concept of customer-centricity and has already gained momentum in the markets with well-deserved success.

“It is the bones of the Nikola TRE and marks the beginning of a new journey towards zero-emissions trucking, providing the platform for us to introduce disruptive features that will change the transport industry.”
