J Clubb trials flexible radar obstacle detection sensor 06 October 2014

Aggregate and concrete supplier J Clubb is trialling Brigade's new radar obstacle detection system, designed to provide drivers with clear warnings of people or obstructions in the way of manoeuvring large plant.

Brigade's BS-8000 system controls the radar beam pattern, and the spread of its Backsense beam can be restricted to the width of the plant for the length of the detection area to minimise false alerts.

The in-cab display provides a visual warning with five LEDs corresponding to adjustable distance zones from the vehicle.

"It is really easy to use. It comes on automatically and the red lights show you how far away you are, which makes manoeuvring easier," confirms J Clubb's loading shovel driver Mark Griffiths.

Detection areas range from 3m to 30m in length, while the beam width is between 2m and 10m. There are also three models with fixed detection areas: 3m, 4.5m and 6m in length.

Brigade fitted the Backsense sensor using an optional stainless steel bracket (BKT-017) which has multiple fitment options, including under-slung, surface mounted or opposed.

"The installation looks factory fitted. There are no wires showing at all. Brigade's fitters did a really good job," states Griffiths.
