JC Balls weighs in with six-wheel tippers with Stonemaster bodies01 September 2016

Derbyshire-based JC Balls & Sons has taken delivery of three 6x4 tippers, built on 350bhp Mercedes Arocs chassis with Thompsons Stonemaster bodies.

The company says it favours six-wheelers for manoeuvrability and versatility, rather than the more typical 8x4 tipper models.

The new additions each have an all-steel, single-skinned Stonemaster body complete with a rear opening hatch built into an air-operated tailgate. Unladen weight is 10,700kgs, giving a 15-tonne payload.

The operator’s Jamie Balls explains the decision: “6x4 tippers have a gross weight of six tonnes less than an eight-wheeler, but in practice our new trucks will carry just four tonnes less.

“Six-wheelers are also much more manoeuvrable, which suits many of our local Derbyshire roads better than an 8x4. And, of course, the lighter trucks are also considerably cheaper to buy and operate.

“For us, the 6x4 tipper is a supremely versatile vehicle, with these latest Thompsons Stonemasters offering a greater performance potential than ever.”
