Knorr-Bremse reveals HD disc brake for the future 19 September 2016

Truck and trailer braking systems specialist Knorr-Bremse says it is developing a new and imp0orved generation of disk brakes for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

Dubbed Synact (synergy and action), they are claimed to set new standards for performance and weight while also “driving forward digitisation of the wheel-end”.

Knorr-Bremse states that the new braking system’s mechanical design ensures that clearance is maintained within a tighter tolerance band, meaning smoother operation and reduced maintenance.

It also says that the new calliper is lighter yet stronger than previous iterations, so enabling 30k/N braking torque to be maintained (up 11%), even during prolonged braking.

“Combined with an approach that offers a complete, functionally optimized wheel-end, including friction pairing and actuator, Synact sets the standards for the vehicle generations of the future, as well as paving the way for the automation steps to be expected in the coming years – such as platooning,” states the company.

And the firm adds that users can expect longer brake service life, lower weight and easier maintenance, thanks primarily to a re-optimised calliper and backing plate design.
