Magtec to develop electric drive system for Volta Trucks04 November 2019

Sheffield-based electric drive system manufacturer Magtec is working with Swedish start-up Volta Trucks on the development of Volta’s fully electric urban vehicle.

Volta Trucks was established in May this year and says its prototype truck will be unveiled at the start of summer 2020; pilot trials are due to take place in London and Paris in 2021.

Volta trucks will be custom-built to order and delivered via a ‘Truck-as-a-Service’ model on seven-year rental contracts. The company says this all-inclusive offer will include infrastructure installation, electricity, driver training, insurance and repair.

The truck maker says its vehicles will be “radically redesigned” for increased safety, with the driver’s seat positioned in the centre of the cab. Access will be via sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle, and the cab is at ‘true floor height’ – street level – to improve visibility for the driver.

Other industry partners include Banbury-based motorsport and technology firm Prodrive.

Volta’s founder and CEO Carl Magnus-Norden says: “With Magtec on board we feel confident that this will help make our trucks road-ready at the pace we see necessary to meet the current, urgent needs of the cities and the people living within them.”
