MAN seeks to set record straight on possible MAN and Scania merger15 November 2010

In a surprise move, MAN has issued a carefully worded statement concerning "ongoing press speculations on a possible combination" between MAN SE and Scania AB.

"It is well known, that MAN and Scania are seeking a closer industrial co-operation in order to realise considerable synergy opportunities. Both companies are in discussions in this regard.

"Both parties are focused on creating value for their shareholders and other stakeholders, and are pursuing this with mutually friendly intentions.

"At the same time, both sides are committed to maintaining the operating businesses and the brand values of the respective companies. This would be the basis for any possible option pursued by MAN.

"At this early stage of the discussions, the outcome is still open and no decisions have been taken."

Points to note: discussions are ongoing; both parties are after "synergy opportunities" (management speak for cost cutting and market growth, but, in this case probably more the former than the latter); there is no denial here of the potential for a merger.

And finally: why would MAN feel the need to issue such a press statement?
