Maritime drivers sail to record bonus payouts03 February 2020

Felixstowe-based Maritime Transport says it paid out a record £1.4m to its drivers at the end of 2019 under its safety bonus scheme.

The operator says the performance of its 2,000 drivers led to many road safety and compliance improvements during the year, including a “major reduction” in total incidents, with each driver receiving an average payout of £500 from the total bonus pot.

The scheme was set up in 2013 to incentivise drivers and is based on telematics data. Key performance indicators such as fuel efficiency, braking and acceleration are used to score drivers, who can become ‘top earners’ at their depots. Last year’s top earners each received payouts of £3,000, says the operator.
