MCL Logistics’ trials lead to all-Michelin tyre policy 11 December 2015

Family-run MCL Logistics says that it is standardising on Michelin tyres fleet wide after tyre sets fitted on a range of its vehicles outperformed an unnamed premium rival in terms of durability, longevity and hence also total cost of ownership.

Jordan Pike, fleet manager for the Newport, Wales-based general and specialist haulier, recalls: “Michelin offered to fit a couple of test sets and we did some trials with a few different types of vehicles.

“We immediately saw that the Michelin tyres lasted much longer, and in the long term, switching to a 100% Michelin policy would work out well for both the company’s operations and for its tyre bill,” he continues.

“In some instances, the Michelin tyres lasted nearly twice as long as the tyres we had been fitting.”

MCL Logistics fleet – which has increased by 65 trucks and 150 trailers over the last three years alone, and now numbers 105 trucks and 220 trailers – primarily runs on Michelin X MultiWay 3D-series tyres. T

“We haul a lot of steel – from steel coil to girders to rebar – into London on a dozen or more runs a day,” states Pike.

“We have Hiab hire transport; we do automotive part deliveries across Europe; and we transport and lay the temporary steel crash barriers you see on the motorways,” he says.

He explains that, as a result, the firm’s fleet is always on the road, with most trucks double or triple shifting..

“So we needed a tyre policy that could match the variety of the work, and the pace of our operations. [And] using a tyre brand that reduces downtime and the threat of a tyre failure is incredibly important,” continues Pike.

Hence the choice of X MultiWay 3D tyres, which means improved resistance to accidental shoulder damage, strong grip and traction in all weather conditions.

MCL Logistics’ tyres are predominantly fitted by ATS Euromaster’s Caldicot centre, although Pike says the firm’s Cardiff team assists on busy days.

“We get a great turnaround time, so we’re more than happy with the Michelin support network too,” adds Pike.
