Mercedes-Benz Sprinter tippers take on Westminster role 11 March 2010

Construction group Balfour Beatty has gone for new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter tippers for road and pavement maintenance work on its Westminster City Council contract.

The 13 Sprinter 516CDIs are all 5.0 tonne gvw units, with crew cabs, powered by the 163hp Euro 5 engine, which is smoother, quieter, more powerful and cheaper to run than its predecessors.

Says Balfour Beatty workplace transport and plant manager Garry Merrills: "Environmental measures are at the top of the agenda for Balfour Beatty and our customer, Westminster City Council. The fact that the Sprinter now comes with a clean, 'green' Euro 5 engine was a crucial factor."

He also says that, even with their crew cabs and relatively heavy steel tipping bodies, his new tippers still offer payloads of about two tonnes.

The backs of the crew cabs were de-glazed on the production line at the Mercedes-Benz factory. Mansfield-based IFT Services fitted the bodies and removed the rear bench seats – ply-lining these areas for use as secure tool storage.

All the tippers, which will work in Westminster for the next six years (or 125,000 miles), are also capable of operation with small, interchangeable electro-hydraulic cranes.

They were supplied by Derby dealer Mertrux, which also provided three more Sprinter chassis fitted with dropside bodies. Balfour Beatty is using these as incident support units on its highways contract in Kent.
