Mercedes trucks pass the finish line for Eurovia07 July 2017

Infrastructure services business Eurovia has taken delivery of four new Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including two 18-tonne Econics to use for painting white lines on roads.

Supplied by dealer S&B Commercials, the Econics are joined by a 26-tonne Antos and a 44-tonne Actros tractor.

The Econic (pictured) features the low-entry, high-visibility cab for added protection of cyclists and pedestrians. Eurovia’s 4x2 Econics and the 6x4 Antos have bodies by Mackworth Vehicle Conversion Specialists.

All have walkways to allow operatives to get on and off the vehicle bed without risking injury, safety rails all round, side underrun guards and four-way recordable camera systems by Brigade, which Eurovia specifies on all of its trucks.

The vehicles carry three 250kg boilers by road marking specialist WJ UK. The plasticised paint they contain must be kept at the correct temperature – Eurovia previously relied on a ‘donkey’ engine to power the boilers but this is now done by a constant drive power take-off from the Econic’s 299bhp six-cylinder engine.

The Antos 2635 has a ClassicSpace M-cab and 354bhp engine, driving through PowerShift automated transmission. This vehicle transports the mastic used to seal joints between concrete sections on roads and bridges. A double-drive configuration was chosen to provide better traction, as it also tows a trailer-mounted road planer.

The Antos also features twin boilers with their own diesel burners – said to be more efficient and cost effective than the traditional gas-powered units used previously.

The 6x2 Actros 2548 StreamSpace tractor hauls plant such as asphalt pavers, backhoe loaders and compactors, to and from sites on a low-loader trailer.

Eurovia has been working with S&B Commercials for a year and has already ordered vehicles, including four- and six-wheeled Econic-based gulley emptiers.

“It’s a brilliant relationship,” says Chris Dixon, Eurovia’s transport and plant operations manager. “The support and communication we receive... is second to none.”

The FORS Bronze operator is aiming for Silver accreditation by the end of the year.
