Merceds-Benz Actros truck trials show further fuel savings 22 July 2011

A 10,000km run across Europe in current and next-generation Mercedes-Benz Actros models has shown the new model's dominance when it comes to fuel consumption.

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros Euro 5 and 6 trucks demonstrated their improved fuel consumption versus the current Actros MP3 Euro 5, which set the fuel consumption world record for 40 tonne trucks in 2008.

All three tractors were powered by Shell FuelSave Diesel and fitted with Shell Rimula R6 LME heavy duty engine oil.

Driving in normal traffic conditions on a regular service route between Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Szczecin, Poland and returning to Rotterdam, the Actros Euro 5 and Euro 6 trucks achieved fuel savings of 7.6% and 4.5% respectively, versus the Actros MP3.

In absolute figures, that equals an average fuel consumption of 25.1l/100km for the Actros Euro 5 and 25.9l/100km for the Actros Euro 6 (Actros MP3: 27.1l/100km).

The official report of the record run, completed by Dekra, which oversaw the test, reinforces the claim by Daimler's Andreas Renschler at the launch of the new truck.

He stated that, depending on the emissions standard, the new model requires 3—7% less fuel than the established Euro 5 truck.

Colin Abraham, Shell's vice president for lubricants and commercial fuels marketing, is also clearly pleased.

"This fantastic achievement underlines how effective our relationship with Daimler has become, in terms of delivering world class fuel efficiency for freight transport vehicles," he asserts.
