Micheldever Tyre Services plumps for Mercedes and Montracon 22 June 2010

Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has taken delivery of 15 new Mercedes-Benz Axor tractor units and 25 aerodynamic Montracon trailers.

The independent wholesaler, distributor and retailer of tyres says it's about bringing trunking back in-house from Wincanton, although the logistics giant will continue to operate the vehicles on MTS' behalf.

Says group fleet manager Malcolm Turnbull: "In the past we've sub-contracted out our entire trunking operation to Wincanton. A change in strategy means that we're now purchasing our equipment, because we believe this will be more cost-effective. It also presents us with the opportunity to utilise the vehicle liveries."

All the Axor's are fuel-efficient 4x2 1840s, with high-roofed sleeper cabs, and the first trucks to wear MTS' new 'big M' livery.

The Axors were supplied by south coast dealer Pentagon Commercials and are based at MTS's depot in Kettering, operated by Wincanton.

Winchester-based MTS runs a Mercedes-Benz-dominated fleet of around 300 commercial vehicles across its operations. Most are Sprinter vans, although the line-up also includes rigid trucks of various sizes, as well as tractor units.

"Mercedes-Benz vehicles are reliable, fuel-efficient and popular with our drivers, as well as being backed by excellent manufacturers' warranties," comments Turnbull.

"Pentagon's sales executives Tony Wright and John Jamieson also provide a first-class service. And so good is the dealer's parts operation that we buy everything we need from Pentagon, then distribute it ourselves to our depots around the country," he adds.
