MIRA broadens commercial vehicle certification services 13 April 2012

Certification and approval specialist MIRA has extended its range of testing to provide to vehicle component, trailer and tyre manufacturers – creating what it describes as a one-stop service.

Richard Whiting, head of certification & homologation at MIRA, explains that the organisation collaborated with RDW (the pan-European approval authority, based in the Netherlands) to develop its offer to test and certify to EC and ECE (global) legislation.

"Being a whole vehicle engineering business, and with the harmonisation of EU law regarding Type Approval tests, we felt that our certification testing capabilities should be as extensive as possible," explains Whiting.

"We are now able to perform and witness vehicle safety testing both on and off-site – awarding certification and providing consultancy to recommend improvements – as well as undertaking any follow-up that may be necessary," he adds.

Whiting confirms that MIRA can now complete testing and certification to UN ECE Regulation 100 'Battery Electric Vehicles Specific Requirements for the Construction of Functional Safety'.

The organisation can also cover UN ECE Regulation 117, 'Tyres for Passenger and Commercial (Noise, Wet, Grip and Rolling Resistance)'.

"2012 will see further harmonisation of European standards, with trailers facing regulations for the first time due to the phased introduction of EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval [Framework Directive 2007/46/EC]," advises Whiting.

"It is estimated that there are around 500 trailer manufacturers in the UK alone to whom this certification will apply, and MIRA is now well placed to help them ensure products manufactured after October 2012 are certified in accordance with EC standards."
