Montracon under-trailer Freddie saves 4 per cent fuel 30 September 2013

Montracon is now offering Hatcher's under-trailer Freddie, which is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by 4%, as an option for refrigerated, curtainsider and van trailers.

Shown fitted to a Langdons' trailer, exhibited on the Montracon stand at the TCS&D exhibition, the under-trailer Freddie uses a parabolic curve faring that sweeps rearwards out and under from the landing legs, extending back 1500mm.

Montracon says track testing of the device fitted to one of its refrigerated trailers indicated fuel savings of 4% at a steady 50mph.

The result was supported by separate, but similar, tests carried out earlier by Hatcher with both a curtainsider and a van, which showed savings of 5—6% at 56mph.

"The tests we have already carried out indicate that the under-trailer Freddie offers significant fuel economy benefits, typically for high average speed motorway operations," states Hatcher managing director Brian Getley.

"We are confident that operator trials currently underway will bear out our findings on the track... We are in discussions with a number of high-profile operators," he adds.
