MWSD urges DfT to implement EU Roadworthiness Package13 February 2015

Truck and trailer wheel distributor Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD) has sounded a note of caution about the government’s recent report into wheel safety and its classification of commercial vehicle wheels as ‘safety critical’.

The report, by the DfT (Department for Transport) entitled 'Heavy Vehicle Wheel Fatigue Study', finds that wheel defects are not catastrophic and are typically identified during routine maintenance procedures.

It also concludes that the concern that CV wheel life is shortened by the use of variable shaped hubs is not proven.

However, MWSD insists that these findings are flawed and represent a "missed opportunity".

The report was based on a survey sent to 11,000 members of the IRTE, FTA (Freight Transport Association) and RHA (Road Haulage Association). However, less than 1% (107) of operators responded.

"One would expect their members to be following best practice, so a majority of UK businesses, and service providers such as fitters and roadside assistance service providers, have been overlooked," warns MWSD's John Ellis.

"With these extra elements incorporated, the results would have been very different."

Ellis says more safety checks should be carried out, and adds that this can be achieved through tighter DVLA guidelines or early adoption of the EU Roadworthiness Package.

A key point raised by the report is the lack of awareness within industry of hub design and of terms such as 'spider' and 'star' hubs.

MWSD is calling for the UK to adopt the EU Roadworthiness Package without delay to raise the standards of mandatory CV wheel testing.
