National Express signs key Volvo Bus deal01 April 2011

Volvo Bus has secured an important order from National Express Group (NEG) to supply a total of 59 new buses, destined for operation in the West Midlands.

The order includes nine hybrid-powered double deck buses – the first vehicles of their kind in the region – delivering new levels of environmental performance and fuel economy.

The hybrids will be latest generation B5LH Hybrid double deck buses, with Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 2 bodywork.

The driveline consists of a five-litre, Euro 5 diesel engine and a 70kW electric motor in parallel configuration. Together with energy recovered from braking, this delivers fuel savings and offers a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel.

In addition, Volvo will deliver 50 single deck B7RLE buses – again with Wrightbus bodywork – on its highly fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly seven litre diesel engine chassis.

"Volvo Bus and Wrightbus are delighted to be awarded this contract," says Volvo Bus' managing director, Steve Dewhurst. "We look forward to seeing the new vehicles – especially the innovative hybrid-powered double decks – operating in the Midlands."
