Network Rail on track for greater capacity with Iveco Daily14 November 2014

Network Rail has taken delivery of 250 Iveco Daily 7-tonne vans to transport its welding crews and materials to sites for carrying out repairs.

The Iveco Daily was selected for its improved load capacity after what Network Rail describes as an extensive evaluation process, with a prototype then trialled in October last year.

The 3-litre EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle) engine in the Daily delivers 170bhp between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm and 400Nm of torque between 1,400 and 2,600 rpm.

Each has been fitted with a 750kg capacity tail-lift to carry the trolley system that enables engineers to operate trackside. The vans also feature reversing cameras and an on-board weighing system.

"Our welding teams wanted a larger vehicle to increase efficiency – the Daily 70C17 vans have met the brief," says Steve Duffy, business support manager for Network Rail.

"The increased capacity of the Daily allows each vehicle to become a full mobile workshop... They allow us to carry more equipment, more economically, plus the larger engine offers greater efficiency as it isn't being overworked."

The vehicles have been delivered during this year, with Network Rail purchasing them outright.

The organisation expects to run each van for six to seven years, depending on mileage.
