New DAF weaves comfort into textile trade operator 11 January 2011

A new DAF 18-tonner has joined the 11-storng vehicle fleet at Lynda's Transport of Huddersfield, which moves textiles through every stage of production, from wool to worsteds.

As well as carrying materials between weavers, dyers and finishers throughout West Yorkshire, the firm is now making twice weekly forays into Scotland to serve the tartan manufacturing industry.

Hence the CF65 rigid, which provides 250bhp (184 kW) – meaning just shy of 14bhp per tonne of power to weight ratio. Matched to a six-speed ZF manual gearbox, the truck is ideal for handling the M62 over the Pennines and Shap on the M6, according to Colin Porter, son of founders Lynda and Donald, who now runs the family business.

DAF dealer F&G Commercials of Huddersfield supplied the truck and will provide ongoing warranty and parts support. The firm also managed the bodying process, through Roco Truck Bodies of Bradford, which fitted the 8.58 metre curtainsider body to the 6.6 metre wheelbase chassis.

As for comfort, this truck has been built to a high spec that includes DAF's Space cab, which has generous headroom, good cross cab access, and a comfortable bunk, underneath which is a 45 litre fridge.

There's also a night heater, an electric roof hatch, and a radio/CD player with six-speaker system.

"I know from my own driving days how important it is to ensure that drivers can enjoy some extra comfort and get a good night's rest," comments Porter.

"In particular the ability to stand up fully when getting dressed and moving around is really important," he says. "And even the tallest person can do that in this big DAF cab, as well as having plenty of space to store clothing and other personal gear. It's a real home from home."
