New DAFs to clock up the miles for ATL23 February 2010

Ascott Transport (ATL) has invested in three DAF CF85s to assist with a an ambitious operation moving raw materials and finished products between Pirelli plants in Burton-on-Trent and Carlisle.

Behind the wheel of the trucks will be 12 drivers, who will operate a double and split shift system to optimise the use of the trucks, which are expected to each cover 275,000 miles a year.

The trucks will always run fully laden, and for Peter Ascott, manager of the business, reliability was the key factor in the choice of DAF trucks.

Fortunately, he and DAF have previous, with 105 models being in the company's fleet. "On this highly intensive operation, we can't afford to have breakdowns. Knowing that there are DAF dealerships at several points along the route gave us added confidence that these trucks would be right for the job," he says.

The investment by ATL covers a couple of two-axle FTs, designed for 40-tonne operation, and a 44-tonne mid-lift axle FTG model. All three feature the same 12.9-litre Euro 5-compliannt MX engine, and AS-Tronic automated transmission.
