Operator selects Schmitz curtainsiders for island supply route23 September 2014

Haulage and transport business Northwards has taken delivery of four more Schmitz Cargobull aluminium fixed-roof curtainsiders, in a deal clinched by Schmitz's ability to deliver quality products in a tight lead time.

Some of the operator's existing Schmitz trailers have been in use for 12 years, but it wasn't a done deal, as Northwards' commercial director Neil Leslie explains.

"We did evaluate trailers from other manufacturers but no one could deliver to the schedule we needed. We simply couldn't afford to wait several months to get new trailers on the road.

"Schmitz Cargobull said they could deliver in just eight to ten weeks, and they kept that promise."

The Lerwick, Shetland-based logistics provider transports supplies from the mainland to the islands, with loads containing anything from timber and salmon feed, to equipment for the oil and gas industry. In late summer, it also returns with Shetland wool to Bradford.

The lowest roof height on a ferry from the Northern Isles is 4.6m, so the curtainsiders were specified at a height of 4.5m to maximise payload.
