Operators urged to consider fuel efficiency of accessories04 April 2019

Operators are being urged to consider fuel efficiency when specifying accessories on a new truck.

The message comes from Volvo Trucks, which is reminding customers that each accessory could potentially reduce fuel consumption by 1%.

In particular, says Johan Eknander, feature development director for Volvo Trucks, long-haul operators may have narrow profit margins that could be wiped out with just a few vehicle accessories.

Eknander says objects such as air horns and name boards can affect fuel efficiency, as well as bull bars and extra lighting.

Some accessories, however, can save fuel, such as roof spoilers, front spoilers, side fairings, side skirts and aerodynamic wheel covers. Other fuel-efficient accessories include air deflectors for side windows and mudguards.

“We, at Volvo Trucks, are all in favour of personalised individual trucks or whole fleets, but customers must be sure to factor in these extras when calculating potential fuel consumption and make smart choices accordingly,” he says.
