Owner-driver picks on power with top-rated Mercedes New Actros02 May 2014

Owner-driver John Phillips has taken delivery of a Euro 6 Mercedes New Actros with a 625bhp, 15.6-litre OM 473 six-cylinder engine – the top-rated power plant in the range and the most powerful in operation in the UK.

Supplied by Mercedes-Benz dealer Rygor, it is the first UK-registered tractor unit to feature this engine. The vehicle has been fitted with an 8-tonne front axle and was specified with the high-performance engine brake.

The New Actros 2563 LS has a GigaSpace cab and was also specified with Bi-xenon headlamps, air deflectors, Alcoa aluminium wheels and Kelsa light bars.

Phillips first saw the truck at the 2012 Commercial Vehicle Show and, he says, was struck by its appearance and comfortable cab.

"I was also encouraged by the fact that, while everyone else was telling me to buy Euro 5, Mercedes-Benz was more forward-thinking and actively promoting its Euro 6 engines long before the latest emissions regulations came into force."

Phillips adds that the truck is already delivering 9.4mpg – on a par with his last truck – and has considerably more power, at 3,000Nm.

The vehicle was supplied with a five-year repair and maintenance contract, delivered by Rygor's Kidderminster branch.

Hartlebury, Worcestershire-based Phillips is using the truck to deliver sheet and coiled steel nationwide for ASD Metal Services.
