Pleasing payload and fuel economy for Allan Sanderson 06 January 2012

A Volvo 32,000kg gvw FMX 8x4 tipper fitted with a Boweld steel body and roll-over sheet is achieving a payload of 20,500kg and fuel returns of 7.9mpg, according to new owner Allan Sanderson of Whitworth, Lancashire.

According to Sanderson, unladen weight of his FMX-450, which features B-Ride rear bogie suspension, aluminium wheels and Volvo's I-Shift transmission, is a very competitive 11,500kg. Not only that, but in these austere times, the Volvo is delivering top fuel figures.

Sanderson says of the four month-old FMX: "It spends its working life in the Pennine hills on the Lancashire, Yorkshire border and within 25 to 50 miles of its base in the Rossendale Valley.

"My son Joseph drives it and it also does off-road work, making deliveries to construction sites. We're particularly pleased with the payload, which is excellent for any eight-wheeler, particularly one with a steel body."

Although the truck works primarily on local deliveries of sand and gravel, the Boweld steel body was specified to allow a degree of flexibility, as it is equally suitable for use on occasional muckaway duties. An additional benefit, says Sanderson, is that "all loads tip easier out of a steel body".
