Protean Electric aims to corner the market for urban mobility27 August 2019

Protean Electric has developed an electric ‘corner module’ concept to integrate powertrain, steering and suspension technologies within a single product, and says this will help next-generation urban transport vehicles to better meet the needs of operators and users.

Called Protean360+, the module is said to be the first of its kind for commercial applications. Its 360-degree steering capability combines with suspension, pneumatic ride-height control and a ProteanDrive in-wheel electric motor, delivering “exceptional” manoeuvrability and accessibility, according to the company.

The module’s compact size means the vehicle’s interior floor can be fully flat and enables wheelchair access via front, rear or side doors. This also means the vehicle can park front-, rear-, or side-on to the kerb, and occupants can disembark on to the pavement.

Once stationary, the pneumatic ride height control drops the entry-point to kerb level.

As well as carrying passengers, Protean says the vehicle could be used for transporting goods, and could be autonomous or driven.

“The Protean360+ corner module intelligently combines cutting-edge, production-ready technologies,” says KY Chan, CEO of Protean Electric.

“Its unrivalled capabilities significantly advance the effectiveness of the urban transport vehicle concept, and we are already in discussion with prospective customers wishing to apply the corner module in their future vehicles.”
