Rail plant firm on track with new Citan vans03 January 2014

Rail plant operating business Railway Drainage Ltd (RDL) has acquired five Mercedes-Benz Citan vans, in a move to begin replacing a mixture of car-derived vans, 4x4s and pick-ups with a single-vehicle fleet.

The long-bodied Citan 109 CDIs were supplied by Mercedes-Benz of Weston-Super-Mare and financed by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

Powered by 90bhp common-rail diesel engines, RDL's Citans were specified with Driver's Packs, including air conditioning, Parktronic proximity sensors and electric folding mirrors. The cargo areas have been fitted with water tanks and heaters to provide washing facilities.

The Maisemore, Gloucestershire-based firm has assigned the vehicles to its supervisors and crane controllers, who will use the Citans across the country to oversee Network Rail projects.

RDL's safety director Paul Saddington says: "We wanted something that would be cost-effective to run and practical, because our supervisors have to carry tools and equipment, as well as small quantities of materials from time to time. The Citan ticked both boxes admirably."

The Citan range combines an optimum fuel performance of 65.7mpg with CO2 emissions of 112 g/km. RDL's vehicles are expected to cover 50,000 miles per year.

"The Citan is the perfect size for this role," adds Saddington, "and we're already achieving some very worthwhile savings on our fuel bill, thanks to its light weight and economical engine."
