Renault leads project to develop new fuel-efficient truck 01 September 2015

Renault Trucks and six partners, including Michelin and Valeo, have launched a project to develop a distribution vehicle that uses 13% less fuel than a current Euro 6 production truck.

The EDIT (Efficient Distribution Truck) project is receiving financial backing from the FUI Regions fund and will have to use technologies that can be made commercially available by 2020.

The prototype vehicle for the project is a Range D Wide Euro 6 with refrigerated body. The aerodynamics of the vehicle and body will be revised, and it will be fitted with a low voltage macro-hybrid system to recover some of the braking energy via a reversible electric system.

This will be used to power auxiliary equipment with recovered electrical energy and can also provide occasional support to the internal combustion engine.

The EDIT project will also focus on developing a new driving aid system: this will be connected to traffic lights and will be able to detect when they will change.

The prototype will also be used to test new tyres with a lower rolling resistance coefficient.

The EDIT project is scheduled to end with the delivery of the first vehicle in 2018.
