Renault, Thompson and Edbro tippers for Welsh land reclamation 27 June 2013

A major project in in South Wales, which aims to reclaim abandoned mine works and spoil heaps for public use is using a fleet of carefully specified bulk tippers.

Bernard Llewellyn, director of contractor Miller Argent, says that the 26 tippers, which transfer coal deposits across the site to the washing and blending plants, are mostly Renault Kerax fitted with Thompson bulk tipper bodies.

Each vehicle operates 12 hours per day, can carry a 23 tonne payload and is expected to make 15 tips per day. Tipping gear is Edbro CX15.

"During the specification process for the vehicles we spoke with the bodybuilders about our requirements and explained that reliability was a key issue," states Llewellyn.

"They recommended that we fit Edbro CX15 cylinders to the vehicles as this would maximise tipping speed, while offering the highest reliability rates in the industry," he continues.

"The combination of Thompson bodies and Edbro tipping gear has proved to be very durable in what is an exceptionally harsh environment. Since operations began we've had no faults and there have been no problems with unplanned downtime."

The Ffos-y-Fran Reclamation project, in Merthyr Tydfil, is using coal produced from the open cast mine to fund the reclamation project, which will restore 1,000 acres of land over a 20 year period.

The first two stages are complete with the final area of 260 acres now in the process of reclamation. The mining operation is producing approximately 20,000 tonnes of coal per week, which is shipped by rail, primarily to the Aberthaw Power Station.
