Road Haulage Association commemorates Great War 11 August 2014

To mark the centenary since the start of World War I, the August edition of the Road Haulage Association's Roadway Magazine includes a 16-page commemorative supplement.

Supported by DAF, it covers the changing face of the UK haulage industry, together with personal experiences from the front.

RHA head of publications Peter Shakespeare explains that the supplement includes previously unseen photographs and addresses the sea change in transport modes that resulted from the conflict.

"Literally tens of thousands of trucks were built in quick time by a fledgling British truck industry for use by the War Department in France," comments Shakespeare.

"After the war, British road hauliers, until then still mainly reliant on horse or steam power, bought these vehicles and they – and the British truck industry until the 1970s – never looked back."

The RHA's commemorative issue can be found in the app edition of Roadway Magazine. Copies have been sent to the Imperial War Museum.
