Road safety is responsibility of all users – Volvo survey06 July 2017

Three-quarters of Britons believe road safety is the responsibility of all road users, and four in ten reckon the government should do more to create a culture of safety.

These are among findings from a survey commissioned by Volvo Trucks to better understand the public’s perception of safety issues in relation to lorries. The survey kicks off a new campaign for Volvo Trucks, called ‘See and be seen’, launching this month.

Respondents ranged from car, van and HGV drivers, to motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, of all ages and from across the UK.

Most (92%) recognise the role that HGVs play in everyday life, but more than half believe trucks pose a safety risk. Of these, 77% believe there is more risk on single carriageways, where other road users are in closer proximity with lorries. The main concern for all is the risk of not being seen by the HGV driver.

Less than one-third (27%) reckon the road haulage sector does enough to assess drivers’ safety performance.

Almost all (96%) of respondents agree that lorry driving requires considerable skill and training, and three-quarters consider it to be a responsible profession.

“This survey has allowed us to understand the public’s broader concerns, and with the upcoming UK launch of our ‘See and Be Seen’ campaign, we will continue to work with the government and the haulage industry to make the roads a safe place for all,” says Mike Corcoran, commercial director for Volvo Trucks UK and Ireland.
